Welford Bowls Club is proud to celebrate a highly successful showing at the EIBA National Finals, with players delivering exceptional performances across multiple disciplines.
In the Men’s Pairs, Adam Smith and Andy Walters produced a memorable run to the final. In a thrilling contest, the pair found themselves trailing by five shots heading into the last end. Demonstrating remarkable composure, they built a superb head and were holding five shots with one bowl remaining from each skip. Unfortunately, the opposition skip delivered a decisive bowl to secure second shot, leaving Smith and Walters just short. Despite the result, their performance throughout the competition was outstanding and a credit to the club.
Kirsty Richards and Amy Walters also impressed in the Women’s Pairs, winning two strong matches to reach the semi-final stage. There, they faced two international players from Sussex and, despite a determined effort, were unable to close a consistent gap of four to five shots, eventually losing by five. Their run to the latter stages highlights their quality and competitive spirit.
The highlight of the championships came on the final day of the 21-day event, as Pam Icke, Tracy Wheeler and Joan Parfitt competed in the Over 50s Triples. After battling through three matches to reach the final, the trio faced a challenging game and trailed for much of the contest. However, showing incredible resilience and belief, they produced a magnificent six-shot end on the 17th to move two shots ahead. Holding their nerve on the final end, they secured victory to become national champions.
This remarkable win underlines the determination and fighting spirit that defines Welford players, proving that matches can always be turned around with focus and teamwork.
Welford also extends its congratulations to all players who qualified for the national finals. Reaching this stage is a significant achievement in itself, and progressing to the latter rounds is a testament to the club’s strength and depth of talent.
With entries now open for next year’s competitions, the club hopes these performances will inspire others to take part. For those new to the sport, the Novice Singles provides an excellent starting point.
